The fan is the messenger
Macs with fans have temperature sensors inside, and Apple explains that the fans turn on by themselves to cool critical parts. So the fan gets louder because something is making heat: a busy app, a hot room, blocked vents, or a lot of work at once.
Not every Mac has a fan. MacBook Air models with Apple silicon are fanless: they stay silent and simply slow down a little when they get very hot. If you hear a fan, you have a MacBook Pro, an Intel MacBook Air or a desktop Mac.
Find what's working hard
- Open Activity Monitor (Command-Space, then type its name).
- Click CPU and sort by % CPU. Anything near the top that you aren't actively using is a suspect.
- For graphics-heavy work, choose Window › GPU History to see how busy the graphics are.
- Quit what you don't need: select it, click the Stop button (ⓧ) and choose Quit.
If kernel_task is near the top, it's macOS holding other processes back because the chip is already hot, Apple explains. It's a symptom, not the cause.
Quiet it safely
- Reduce the load. Close tabs, pause big syncs, and let exports run when you're away from the Mac.
- Turn on Low Power Mode. In System Settings › Battery, choose Low Power Mode under Energy Mode. Apple says that on macOS Sequoia 15.1 and later it also helps reduce fan noise on Macs with fans.
- Give it air. Apple says to use a Mac laptop on a stable surface that allows good ventilation, never on a bed or a pillow, and not to put anything into the vents.
- Clean dusty vents carefully. On older Intel Macs especially, dust builds up over the years. If you're not comfortable with this, a repair shop can clean inside safely.
- Be careful with apps that slow the fans down. Holding fans below what macOS asks for just lets heat build up, and then macOS slows the chip instead. Quiet is good; quiet and hot is not.
When it's loud with nothing running
If the fan runs fast even after a restart, with nothing busy in Activity Monitor:
- Close and open the lid, or restart, as Apple suggests.
- On an Intel-based Mac, Apple lists resetting the SMC as a further step.
- A rattle, grinding, clicking or a fan that never stops points to hardware. Contact Apple.
